PreCanSkate Ages 3-5

Is your little one ready to take their first steps on the ice? PreCanSkate is the perfect introduction to skating for our youngest beginners, designed specifically for children ages 3 to 5. Through games, activities, and age-appropriate skill development, this program builds confidence, balance, and a love of the ice in a fun, safe, and nurturing environment.

PreCanSkate gives children the foundational skills they need to begin their skating journey, all with a smile on their face. It is the first step on a lifelong adventure on the ice!

CanSkate Ages 5 and up

CanSkate is Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for skaters ages 5 and up. Built on a foundation of fun, fitness, and skill development, CanSkate teaches the fundamental skating skills that every skater needs — balance, control, agility, and confidence on the ice.

Through a badge-based achievement system, skaters progress through six stages at their own pace, each one building on the skills learned in the last. With energetic music, engaging activities, and a supportive group environment led by certified Skate Canada coaches, CanSkate makes learning to skate an exciting and rewarding experience for every child.

Whether your skater is dreaming of hockey, figure skating, or simply loves being on the ice, CanSkate gives them the skills and confidence to take their skating wherever they want to go. It all starts here!

Pre-Preliminary CanSkate 5&6

Pre-Preliminary is the exciting next step for skaters who have completed CanSkate Stages 5 and 6, marking the transition from learn-to-skate into the world of figure skating skill development. This program introduces skaters to the foundational elements of the Skate Canada STARSkate pathway in a fun and encouraging environment.

Skaters begin to explore more refined edges, basic skating skills, and introductory dance and freeskate elements, building the technical foundation they will carry with them throughout their skating journey. Pre-Preliminary is where the love of skating truly begins to blossom into something special.

Adult Learn to Skate

It is never too late to learn to skate! Adult CanSkate is Skate Canada's learn-to-skate program designed specifically for beginners ages 14 and up who are stepping onto the ice for the very first time or looking to build their basic skating skills from the ground up.

In a welcoming and supportive environment tailored to adult learners, skaters develop balance, confidence, and fundamental skating skills at their own pace — free from the pressure of keeping up with younger skaters. With certified Skate Canada coaches guiding every session, Adult CanSkate makes learning to skate a comfortable, enjoyable, and achievable experience no matter your age or starting point.

Whether you are looking to try something new, stay active, or simply finally check skating off your bucket list, Adult CanSkate is the perfect place to begin your journey on the ice!

Why sign up for CanSkate?

CanSkate is Canada's only national learn-to-skate program. This program focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. It was developed by experts to teach the fundamentals of skating progressively and sequentially. Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP certified professional coach. Professional coaches are assisted by trained Program Assistants. The coach-to-student ratio is a maximum of 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate, and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning. CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada Skating Programs.

Who’s it for?

For beginners of all ages, children or adults, as well as for those wishing to improve their basic skills whether their focus be for figure skating, hockey, speed skating or just skating for fun.

Who teaches it?

NCCP-trained professional coaches, assisted by trained program assistants.

What will you learn?

A complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.

What can you expect?

Action, movement and fun! Lessons are given in a group format with a coach-to-student ratio of a maximum 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning. Badges, ribbons and other incentives are used to benchmark skaters’ progress and reward effort and participation.

What do you need to participate?

All you need are skates, a CSA-approved hockey helmet, long pants, mittens, warm sweater or jacket. Dress in layers.
